You may have seen ads on TV or online for a site called Ebates.com promising cash back from online purchases. Ebates has been around for a long time and is one of the most established cash back sites. If you shop online a lot, the lure of cash back is definitely a tempting proposition. Is it a legit site though? That question prompted us to do an Ebates review for you all.
How Do You Earn Cash Back?
Ebates works off an affiliate referral system. When you shop through the links on Ebates sites you use links that are unique to them. When these links are used Ebates receives a commission for referring you to the merchant's website. You earn cash back when Ebates shares a portion of their commission with you.
What Can You Expect When You Sign Up?
To use Ebates you have to create an account by signing up with your email address. It is completely free to sign up. When you do you will be offered a free bonus as well. For example when I registered I was offered a choice between a $10 Walmart gift card or $10 in cash back from Ebates. In order to receive the bonus you have to make a purchase through Ebates within a certain amount of time.
The amount of merchants on the site is pretty impressive. They have almost all the major shopping sites and brands the you can think of such as Groupon, Amazon, Ebay, Etsy, Nordstrom, Sephora, Walmart, Target, and so much more. All you have to do is lookup the site and click on the link to go to the merchant's website. Make your purchase and then you'll see the cash back credits pop up in your account.
Once every quarter you will receive a payment automatically from Ebates either via check or Paypal. In order to be paid you must have earned at least $5.01 throughout the quarter. Otherwise you balance will roll over into the next quarter. You $10 bonus from signing up doesn't count towards the $5.01.
The Pros and The Cons
The biggest pro of shopping with Ebates is pretty clear, and that is the cash. The downside is that the rebates tend to range between 1% to 6% cash back on your purchase. This generally isn't much money, so determining if Ebates is worth your time really comes down to how much online shopping you do. I personally don't shop online all that often, but when I do I love the idea of saving a little bit of extra money. I am just not sure I'll be able to rack up enough cash to even make it to earning a quarterly check. However, if you love shopping online and this is your preferred method of shopping, then Ebates is a clear winner. It is very simple to sign up and to use and there are tons of merchants to choose from. One thing to note is that some merchants have restrictions on the categories of merchandise that are eligible for earnings. For example, on Amazon only certain categories will count. These types of restrictions will all be expressly stated to you on the Ebates site where applicable.
This Ebates review can be summed up in one simple statement. If you shop online regularly definitely sign up. If you don't Ebates is likely not worth your time. Let us know in the comments below if you found this Ebates review helpful and what your experiences are with the site.
